Kolkata Airport has initiated operational trials for its new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, marking a significant advancement in enhancing air traffic management and flight safety.

Trial Details:

Duration and Scope: The trials commenced on March 24, 2025, with the ATC tower being operational for two hours each weekday. During these trial periods, approximately 40 aircraft are expected to land and take off, allowing controllers to manage real-time flight operations and assess the tower's functionality.

Operational Team: The new tower is staffed by around eight technicians specializing in communication, navigation, and surveillance. Their role is crucial in ensuring the seamless integration of advanced technologies and the efficient management of air traffic during the trial phase.

Technological Enhancements:

Advanced Systems: Equipped with state-of-the-art digital technologies for communication and air traffic management, the new ATC tower aims to enhance the safety and efficiency of flight operations. These upgrades are designed to support the growing air traffic demands and improve overall operational capabilities.

Background:

Construction and Development: The construction of the new ATC tower and technical block was completed in late 2023. The facility is designed to accommodate all Air Navigation Services units, facilitating efficient air traffic management and supporting the airport's expansion plans.

Future Plans: Following the success

ful trial phase and full
internationalization of the new ATC tower, the existing and new facilities will operate in tandem during a transition period. This approach ensures a smooth switchover and minimizes disruptions to air traffic operations.

The introduction of the new ATC tower underscores Kolkata Airport's commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure, improving safety protocols, and accommodating increasing air traffic volumes
